THE CHECKLIST AND WORKSHEET TO FEELING CONFIDENT WITH YOUR EXPERTISE

SOME OF MY FRIENDS  ARE EXPERTS IN THEIR FIELDS, BUT THEY THINK THEY HAVE NOTHING TO CONTRIBUTE. MY TRAINEES DID THE SAME. SO I CREATED A LIST OF SKILLS THEY HAD. I REMOVED THEIR NAMES FROM THEIR RESUME'S AND SENT THE RESUME' TO HR. I ASKED IF THEY CAN WORK WITH THOSE CANDIDATES. HR SAID:"YES, RIGHT NOW!"
I AM NO MAGICIAN. I CAN ONLY WORK WITH IT RESUME'S. STILL THAT  IS WHAT THEY NEVER EXPECTED.
I HAVE REQUESTED MY PALS TO BLOG AND THEIR ANSWER IS : I DON'T KNOW THAT MUCH.
FRIEND: WHAT WILL I BLOG ABOUT
ME: YOUR JOB
FRIEND : I DON'T HAVE TIME.
ME: YOU DO HAVE 15 MINUTES.
FRIEND NO ONE WILL READ!
ME: I WILL READ, TWEET AND  HELP.
FRIEND: MY JOB IS AWFUL
ME: ALL THE MORE IMPORTANT TO BLOG, ITS THERAPEUTIC!
DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE NOTHING TO BLOG ABOUT? YOU TOTALLY DO! YOU ARE DEVELOPING YOUR BRAND, TESTING YOUR AUDIENCE AND WORKING FROM HOME. WHAT WILL YOU GIVE TO WORK FROM HOME?
Me, I'd give a lot to work from home. I already do. I developed a worksheet and a checklist for my students who wanted to earn money on the side. This should work for you.
THE WORKSHEET:
  1. Document as many instances as possible where you impressed yourself, your colleagues and bosses with your work.
  2. What was your best test score and why?
  3. When did you coach anyone?
  4. What and how did you troubleshoot anything at work?
  5. Name some un-reacheable goals at work.
  6. What have you tried so far?
  7. Since those methods failed what will you try?
THE CHECKLIST :
  1. You picked a goal.
  2. You have a deadline.
  3. You have a strategy and list of smaller goals.
  4. You are networking.
  5. You are gathering rejection letters.
  6. You are documenting your efforts
  7. You are eliminating methods that don't work, polishing things that do.
AFTER 60 DAYS, YOU WILL HAVE GAINED SO MUCH.
MY FAILURE IN TRAINING: HOW I USED IT TO LEVERAGE MY NEXT TRAINING SESSION.
Teaching programming and scripting languages is tricky. I gave my trainees some work. Only 5 out of 24 got the job done.
They had material and lectures, so why the poor performance? I broke the task into tiny portions. I have 85% success. So the  trouble was that I expected them to blend some important functions and sew together 70 lines of code with new functions. Some used subroutines. I also gave them code to debug. It was some 150 lines in length and had many variables.
I told them that i will devote two sessions till everyone got it right. By the next Monday. everyone had the coding work down. It cost me two sessions, and so I failed to complete the syllabus on time.
I used that anger hurt and fear to my advantage: I began using the above worksheets and checklists.
I created a way of tracking progress and awarding bonus points to those who finished tasks on their own. I then made them demonstrate their methods to those who were lagging behind despite hard work. This symbiotic approach helped in four ways:
There was less disruption.
There was more training "ground" covered!!
Assignments were complete.
The syllabus got finished before the last class, so we reviewed all material.
YOU MAY FAIL, BUT ONLY ONCE. USE IT. USE THE ANGER. THANK YOU FOR READING. PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT.

THE COST OF FIGHTING PLAGIARISM, THE BIGGEST DOWNSIDE TO THEFT.

THIS POST IS THE SUMMARY OF WHAT I HAVE SEEN OVER THE YEARS.
THE INVENTOR HAS A RIGHT TO FIGHT PLAGIARISM. WHAT IS THE PRICE OF FIGHTING IT?
COPYRIGHT, TRADEMARK AND PATENTS BY THEMSELVES ARE EXPENSIVE, LET ALONE THE PRICE OF FIGHTING PLAGIARISM.
SCENARIO 1: An innovative intern creates a product that will save money, time and effort. His boss steals the idea and presents it to the world. The intern cannot fight the 40+ boss with friends in high places.
SCENARIO 2:
Day 0
A tyrannical dictator of a boss demands that no one leaves till their bottle neck issue with sales and the dipping numbers in production and distribution are solved. It violates so many rules, it's not even funny! A naive but brilliant employee then provides a viable solution with his outside the box thinking. 14 other employees are relived that they now have a solution and can go home.
Day 1
The area manager and the site directors congratulate the tyrannical boss for his idea. 14 witnesses commit a lie of omission and then the one who came up with the idea does not get credit. If he sues his company or so much as demands and acknowledgement for his idea and a promotion based on how he out did  14 others, while underscoring their lack of ethics, he now has a terrible future. the boss gets a promotion and is assigned two new interns he can harass.
Day 2
Law suit filed. Employee who spoke up is terminated because his desk had too many paper clips.
Day 21
Employee has applied to 9 new companies, but now has been black listed and has no references to speak of and even his best friend at work refuses to provide a testimonial to employee's brilliance , to the bosses misbehavior.
Day 31
Employee now works at Apple store.
Day 1214
Judge finds for employee-plaintiff.. He is awarded the cost of the lawsuit. Attorneys Howe Dewey and Cheatem buy a yacht.
Even the football coach who bent the rules for recruiting has a job and several endorsement deals. Brilliant Employee has a small time job and no future.
REAL world examples:
  1. Jessica Shepherd covers this very well here.
http://www.theguardian.com/education/2007/oct/30/highereducation.uk
2) Joany Chou a post doc invented the Herpes avccine, from what I understood. She said to her boss that it could be patented, He did not respond very clearly. soon after she was not allowed back in the lab (!!!!).
She then discovered that he had filed a patent and that he  had been collecting royalties.
She won the case. Now what? Do you see her proudly leading the research life that she should have? Did Harvard invite her for a short period to teach, carry out a small research project? If you know what she is doing please let me know. The sad truth that I see when students and employees stand up and fight  then they have a terrible life. They seem to be living in the shadows. Plaintiffs and whistle blowers never live an easy life. The miscreants seem to have so much power.

THE ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF THEFT
A company or a startup invests everything it has and then sells a product. The 2nd month sales dwindle. Someone has copied it and is manufacturing it without paying royalties. A small startup where an entire family, with Mom, dad kids, uncles and cousins are working, has to declare bankruptcy.  They now have losses of thousands of dollars. IS IT ENOUGH THAT THEY MERELY THINK PLAGIARISM IS ACTUALLY A COMPLIMENT THAT THEIR PRODUCT IS GREAT ENOUGH TO BE STOLEN? Manufacturers need to license the technology the design and the utility patents associate with a product.
The lack of severe punishment of plagiarism and infringement causes most inventors to hide their inventions.

COMMENTS:
QUESTION: DO YOU THINK PEOPLE WHO FIGHT PLAGIARISM AND IDEA THEFT AND STAND UP TO BIG CORPORATIONS, INSTITUTIONS HAVE A GOOD LIFE AFTERWARDS? FROM WHAT I SEE  MAYBE THEY DONT!
DO YOU SEE THE COST OF FIGHTING PLAGIARISM, THE DOWNSIDE TO FIGHTING THEFT?
COMMENTS:
I TRULY APPRECIATE YOUR FEEDBACK.  SOME OF YOU HAVE LEFT VERY INSIGHTFUL COMMENTS. I THANK NENA AND SHINEPOSITIVEPOWER, FOR THEIR  COMMENTS ON MY OTHER POSTS. THANK YOU NANSYE LEE, HEIDI!! THANK YOU  SABAHBATUL, KALLY AND NOBLETHEMES FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT. YOU MAKE ME A BETTER WRITER. PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT. PLEASE WAIT FOR YOUR COMMENT TO BE MODERATED. THANK YOU SO MUCH. KALLY NOMINATED ME FOR AN AWARD, SINCE I HAVE FEWER THAN 200 FOLLOWERS. TY KALLY!
NOTE: HERE EMPLOYEES AND STUDENTS HAVE THE SAME STANDING.

Wrongful ownership of ideas in the industry and the academia, Bullying.

SCENARIO 1
Two companies that competed with each other poached each others interns. One such poached intern  was working on an idea that would revolutionize plastic packaging. His internship was for the summer, and the company said that they had the sole rights to it. The other company then shared the patent. The poached and hence shamed intern was left with nothing. He at least has learned to never share his ideas without protecting them. One tough lesson.
SCENARIO 2
A man abused his spouse and she wrote about that after getting away from him. The book was a best seller for weeks and established her for life. The man , her tormentor, said he deserved half of everything because if he did not abuse her she would not have a story!!!By that math all criminals whose victims get famous have a right to compensation?
SCENARIO 3
A Phd student from Russia states that his discovery of imaginal disc related properties in the embryos of  Drosophila spp was stolen by his Professor, Dr.Larsen. Foreign students seem to be very vulnerable.
This has been my rant for some time. However, I am not depressed!
I read about a young girl who proved that an invasive species , the Lionfish, could invade freshwater as well AS SEAWATER! Her parents are in the academia. All she got was a mention from one of the professors she was working with in a publication. I would have given her her own publication or a primary author status.
After all these years I am realizing that the industry as well as the academia prey upon those who have brilliant idea. Is it any wonder that Zuckerburg, Larry Paige, Elizabeth Holmes and hundreds of other inventors are walking away from traditional schools? The Khan academy is one such place.  Check it out.
Now this is the ERA of MOOCS, Youtube and 3-d printers. I have hopes. Anyone can invent, create a prototype and sell licenses. The ones that cheat and copy will not have the brilliance to handle all problems.
In the past it was hard to get published. Now there is the internet!
With self publishing tools, we have done away with protocols involving professionals who behaved badly.
The more I read about bullied students, interns and employees, the more I am convinced that one should always hold back their best ideas. Plagiarism, theft and cheating has made me write  and present to you work that has a tenth of the effort that I normally put in.
Dear copycat: I am glad you decided to copy. I now hide my work better. It will be open to a handful AFTER I take steps.

Here is an excerpt from the site above :

"DocCraig said...
My partner also had a bad experience at the University of Leicester. Basically they treat international students like s***. Many international students are better than their corrupt mentors back home in Asia.
Yet, some are getting failed and sent back home with no degree and all the shame that comes with it. External examiners in this case had no expertise in the field and failed on the basis of the thesis not be related to Geography etc.
Most professors have no idea about how other cultures operate and how they perpetuate corruption by failing good students and allowing older corruption lecturers back home prosper. Some external examiners will only pass high-end super rich international students who were fed with English from birth.
Yet in some subject areas they pass weak Chinese students in social science fields as they generate so much money for these programmes.
This is known to happen across more than one school and education in particular has well-known cases which they brush under the carpet. External examiners are King, nobody can cross them and I would urge students to select their own external as academics seriously are flawed and don't know how to match external examiners to students.
We have had to delay having children because of the unfair decision whilst this university continues to market itself as not elitist.
UK universities offer poor vlaue for money and poor training within departments. Some international students swop subjects in order to enroll on PhD progrmames because they may have much better English than their peers, however, they struggle with the new subject content with no previous background which the university is not factoring in.
US universities provide a much better PhD training from what have heard- beware of the social science PhD in the UK. I have heard too many tales of how long it has taken people to finish.

WILL YOU EVER TRUST A PROFESSOR OR A MENTOR OR A COLLEAGUE EVER AGAIN? NO ONE SHOULD!
I KNOW NOW, THAT I WOULD NEVER EVER TRUST ANYONE WITH MY GOOD IDEAS!
DEAR READER, PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT! THOSE OF YOU WHO LEAVE THE MOST MEANINGFUL , FREQUENT COMMENTS WILL GET RECOGNITION AND OF COURSE MY SUPPORT AND GRATITUDE!!
MUCH OBLIGED! :)

THE MOST POPULAR BLOG, PLAGIARISM

#iblogstats
The point of this blog is to address statistics of blogs, vlogs, microblogs.
  • The most prevalent type of blog is the food blog.

  • The average blog is discontinued in 2 months.
  • The average time it takes to establish a steady readership is _____________?
I expected engineering and statistics blogs to be on the rise. While they did increase in number, that number is nowhere near what I expected. One of the strongest reasons is that people consider that work.
I spoke to an engineering student about his designs and he said he wanted to patent and publish, but that the funding came from the department, so ownership issues arise.
I asked him to blog about it. He said: My department may find out and that means I have posted information that needs to be approved first.
IS it fair that he go through all that? Nope.
He also said that there were many copycats around. I said: Hey man, electrical engineers cannot copy material that easily.
He then showed me his lab partner's submissions. Clearly this student was the first to come up with the design and concept, but the lab partner, while pretending to be nice, copied everything. We both sat down, I cancelled my one-hour workout and we both dug up information on how the original work from the electrical engineering student was plagiarized.
We submitted evidence to the Office of Academic Integrity.  We accomplished that in FOUR hours. The international student was expelled and he went back to his home country. He will continue to plagiarize. He cost the other student hours of loss of work. My point is simple: Plagiarism abounds and this is preventing good blogs from showing up. I invite my readers to provide their solutions.

My personal experience with plagiarism:
After 10+ years in the world of hardcore statistics, computing and research, I have so much material that I would never have to plagiarize. I actually find plagiarism beneath me. I ask myself: Am I not better, smarter, quicker?
Recently, I took pity on someone and they plagiarized everything from me. they started playing the game of a stalker.
They copy my work but they don't give credit and cite my work.
The strategy I use, they reword and publish IMMEDIATELY.  DISGUSTING.
NOW MULTIPLY THAT FEELING  A 100 TIMES. WHAT IF YOUR MENTOR WAS USING YOUR WORK?
I SET A TRAP. I AM GOOD LIKE THAT. ONE DAY, WHEN MY INFRINGEMENT CASE IS OVER, I WILL PUBLISH THE STORY.
I CREATED THREE WORKS THAT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN ACCOMPLISHED WITH OUT THE FACULTY MEMBER GETTING CAUGHT RED-HANDED. I LEFT THE WORKS IN MY LAB. BY 2PM, I HAD EVIDENCE OF PLAGIARISM. I THEN SENT A LOVELY EMAIL TO THE OFFICE OF ACADEMIC INTEGRITY. ALL THOSE PROCEDURAL WORKS  WERE NOT FOR NOTHING!
THAT MAN IS NOW AN ADJUNCT IN A SMALL COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

IS ANYONE COPYING FROM YOUR WORK/ARTICLE/BLOG SHAMELESSLY AND POSTING THINGS ON THEIR SITE?

TIME YOU SET A TRAP!!
